Title: History Teaching Sessions

History teaching sessions at Birmingham Museum are now available to both Birmingham and non-Birmingham Schools.

Teaching Sessions for Birmingham Schools
Birmingham schools are taught by the Schools Liaison teacher Peter Ray. He will take your class on an inspiring journey based on one of a number of key history topics: Ancient Rome, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Please choose an option below to find out more:

  • Toys from the Past (Key Stage 1)
  • Ancient Rome: Investigating a Roman Centurion’s uniform and weapons, then observing, handling and investigating objects from ancient Rome. (Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2)
  • Ancient Egypt: Looking at artefacts and using them to build up a picture of everyday life in ancient Egypt. (Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2)
  • Ancient Greece: Uncovering a story of Petros, an Ancient Greek Athlete, exploring the history behind the Olympic games then handling a variety of object from ancient Greece. (Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2)
  • World War 2: life in Birmingham 1939 – 1945
  • Home for Christmas: meet a soldier in 1943.
  • The Glittering Gold - Exploring Saxon Treasure: Pupils will investigate the mystifying history of the Hoard using costume and storytelling.

Teaching Sessions for non-Birmingham Schools
Non-Birmingham schools are taught by the Schools Support Officer. The sessions are based around object handling and historical enquiry for Key Stage one and two children. Sessions relate to different aspects of the primary curriculum. Some of the sessions available are:

  • Ancient Egypt: This is an evidence based handling session during which all children will get the chance to explore genuine Egyptian artefacts.
  • Roman Remains: Pupils learn about life as a Roman soldier and children will get the chance to handle artefacts.
  • The Glory That Was Greece: Pupils use the Ancient Greek gallery decide what our collection of ceramics can tell us about life in the past.
  • The Glittering Gold - Exploring Saxon Treasure: Pupils will investigate the mystifying history of the Hoard using costume and storytelling.
