The River Tame
has featured in Aston's history for centuries. It was originally a source
of water for the straggling medieval village of Aston. As farming was the
main activity it would have provided water for the animals too. It was a
fast flowing river and, in Tudor and Stuart times, powered water hammers
for iron forges . Nowadays the River Tame is hidden in culverts or ditches
and makes its sluggish way through the area. This pictue shows the river
with the A38 expressway above and the railway viaduct to the right. |
