By 1615 Sir Thomas Holte had built an iron furnace on Aston Heath. It smelted iron ore. The pigs of cast iron were then worked into wrought iron by the hammer forges along the River Tame. The picture shows the Aston furnace in 1844 with Birmingham in the background. The furnace is no longer there and the area is covered with houses, roads and industrial buildings. |
