Rich and Poor Tudor Lives
Through this lively teaching session children build an understanding about the contrasting lives of rich and poor people 400 years ago. This session includes artefact handling, costume work and encourages children to think about how we know about the past. (ALSO available as Outreach)

Inventory Detectives
Children are challenged to investigate the family who lived at Blakesley Hall in Tudor times using a range of primary source material such as wills, inventories and maps. What did the surrounding area look like? Were the family rich? How do historians know what things people had in their homes? The Detectives will discover!

How do I know if Blakesley Hall is a real Tudor house?
‘Is it real?’ Pupils are challenged to work out if Blakesley is genuine Tudor house or a reconstruction? A series of guided group activities will ask the children to look at the layout, decoration and materials used to build it.

How can we learn about Henry VIII using Blakesley Hall?
Children investigate the similarities between Richard Smalbroke, owner of Blakesley Hall and Henry VIII. Using images, plans and evidence from written sources, they are encouraged to find out about Henry’s life
and his home at Hampton Court Palace and Richard’s at Blakesley.

Tudor Role Play
Stepping back in time and acting as people looking for work, children meet the Joan Smalbroke, whose father owns Blakesley Hall. They learn about the role of a Tudor servant in a grand house and have the opportunity to question Joan about her life.

Lotions and Potions
Children find out about Tudor health and hygiene and discover how herbs were used to treat illnesses in the past. How often did Tudors bathe? What were their attitudes to cleanliness? Children will also see and smell real Tudor cures!

Special Workshops:

Have a ‘Merry’ Victorian Christmas (9 - 12 Dec 2013 only)
Children will meet Mrs Merry, who lives at Blakesley Hall and discover how the Victorians invented the Christmas we know today. They will help decorate our Great Hall and learn about presents received by Victorian children before making a selection of traditional Victorian Christmas decorations. There will also be a chance to play Victorian parlour games.

How did Tudors celebrate Christmas? (2 - 6 Dec 2013 only)
Mistress Joan Smalbroke, who lived at Blakesley Hall during Tudor times, will help children find out how Christmas was celebrated 400 years ago. Children will learn about seasonal beliefs, superstitions and traditions, and explore Mistress Smalbroke's home. They will be invited to make a wish on the plum pudding mix, dance in the Long Gallery and join in Tudor Christmas games.

CSI: Blakesley (Spring term)
GASP! A priceless artefact has been stolen from Blakesley Hall. Working as detectives, pupils are asked to collect evidence, listen to suspect statements and work together to try and crack the crime and discover the culprit.

Fascinating Facts about Forces (Spring term)
Children are encouraged to understand the role of gravity, friction and push and pull forces in everyday Tudor life through a tour of Blakesley Hall. During a practical workshop, they will explore how magnets work and take part in an experiment to make a simple magnetic compass. Then, using the fight against the Spanish Armada as a reference, pupils will work in teams to construct a simple sailboat. This will help children to test water and air resistance and encourage them to think about streamlining and appropriate materials.

A Tudor School Day Role Play (Spring term)
Stepping back in time, children learn about the daily life as a rich Tudor school boy. This day includes a walk up to Yardley Village to see the original Yardley Grammar School and St Edburgha’s church. Children also take on roles as school boys, meet Master Rastell, schoolmaster, and experience a Tudor lesson, including learning some Latin!
