'Unshackled’ - a youth response to the life of Olaudah Equiano
Through the use of contemporary images, reproduction artefacts such as shackles and specially produced costume, KS2 children will learn about the life of Olaudah Equiano from childhood to freedom and finally his involvement in the abolitionist movement. This completely interactive session includes discussion, group work and role play. Session lasts 1½ hours.

Unshackled Exhibition
House from the Past – What were homes like a long time ago?
Supports QCA History units 1 and 2
Children have a tour comparing life today with life 200 years ago. Alternatively there is a different tour option exploring life of the servants ‘The Butler’s Day’. There is also opportunity to explore our classroom activities with old fashioned toys to play with, a ‘then & now’ activity, a scrap book to make and lots more artefacts to handle.

Mary Seacole – Why do we remember…
Supports QCA History unit 4 and Citizenship unit 5
Children get to explore our trunk of 19th century artefacts. These objects are used to tell Mary’s fascinating story. This is a totally interactive session, involving the class in role play activities, where they come to appreciate some of the difficulties Mary encountered as a Black woman making her way in a white dominated society.

Children can explore the lives of James Watt and Matthew Boulton. Practical activities are included in an extended tour of the house to discover more about the fascinating lives of these two men.

Material World – Rocks and Soils
Supports QCA Science units 3c & 3d
Children conduct hands on investigations with selections of rocks, fossils and minerals. They learn how rocks and fossils are formed and explore the wonder of nature’s minerals.

Light – Light and shadows / How we see things
Supports QCA Science units 3f & 6f
A practical workshop making a pinhole camera & investigating a vast array of mirrors and lenses. During the course of the session children learn how and why a pinhole camera works and discover how this relates to the human eye. Additional activities can encompass work relating to the movement of the earth around the sun to shadows, reinforced with the making of a sundial.

Flower Power – Life Cycles
Supports QCA Science unit 5b
Practical workshop; children learn about classification, learn about flower parts using our specially contructed giant flowers and make flower models to take home. Can be combined with our Plant Passport activity to investigate the plants in the Soho garden.

Pattern – Investigating pattern

Soho House has a staggering wealth of patterns all around the house. In this brand new workshop pupils will be able to follow a pattern trail around the House and participate in a pattern workshop melding ideas and techniques from the East and West. Using rangoli as inspiration pupils will produce practical pattern work to take back to class.

With the aid of 4 of our historic chairs at Soho House children will find out about the history of chairs, different parts of a chair and different ways of making and using chairs. They will also complete a design sheet to enable them to explore and develop their ideas back in the classroom.

With the aid of some of our wonderful and designated collections at Soho House, children complete some Object Passports to enable them to explore the reasons behind the design of certain objects and look closely at different materials and patterns. Worksheets are taken back to the classroom where they can be used as inspiration for the development of their ideas.

Portraits – Portraying relationships

We have a number of wonderful portraits on display at Soho House. Children will have the opportunity to discuss how the portraits are constructed and what they tell us about the person depicted. Initial work to explore and develop ideas back in the classroom.

Storytelling
Supports Primary framework for literacy
Children can join in with Soho’s experienced practitioners in an interactive storytelling session. KS1 children combine the session with a related craft activity whilst KS2 can opt for a related drama workshop. Children can also have the opportunity to create their own stories using story-boarding, freeze-framing and role play.

Gardens & Parks
