The
later farm (pictured left) was
itself demolished in 1955. However
an apple tree from the last farm
orchard/kitchen garden still grows
within the interior of the castle,
and a section of wall associated
with the farmstead survives on
the ground today.
Between 1955 and 1962 excavations
were carried out by Adrian Oswald,
Keeper of Archaeology at Birmingham
Museum and Art Gallery. He further
examined parts of the moat and
the interior platform. His most
significant find was a preserved
timber structure of a thirteenth
century kitchen, which was originally
connected to the stone Great Hall
by a long wooden service passage.
Dressed stone from the castle
was also incorporated into other
local buildings such as the Stone
House, as well as garden features
such as rockeries in the surrounding
housing estate.
