The Second World War affected the lives of everyone in Britain, not only for those who went away to the army and navy but also for those who stayed behind. Those on the 'Home Front' had to cope with fear, destruction and shortages.
Let's find out about the Second World War. You can see lots more Word War II artefacts on display at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Gas Mask
Adults, children and some animals including horses wore gas masks to help them breath during the bombings of the Second World War.
Stirrup Pump
These were used to help put out fires caused by ‘incendiary bombs’.
Ration Book
In January 194O food rationing was introduced because it was so difficult to import food. People were encouraged to grow their own food in gardens and allotments.
Helmet
World War II helmets were usually made of tin and were worn during the air raids to protect the person’s head.
