Coppice

Coppicing is a form of woodland management that involves cutting trees at just above ground level.

This leaves a short stump (marked by the red arrow) known as a stool. The tree grows back with multiple stems and can be cut again after a few years.

This management produces a sustainable supply of timber for a variety of uses depending on the species of tree.

It also increases the life span of the tree being cut.
