Iron was used for door hinges, locks, grates, firebacks and workmen's tools.

  • It came ore from an underground mine.

  • The ore was heated at a very high temperature to get the iron out.

  • The patterns in the iron firebacks and grates were made by pouring very, very hot iron into sand moulds. The design was made in the sand by stamping it first with a wooden pattern.
