Georgian Times Agriculture An agricultural revolution was said to have taken place during the eighteenth century! An increasing population required more food and with no competition from abroad English landowners and farmers enjoyed a period of great prosperity. They had money to make all sorts of improvements to their farms and livestock. Thomas Coke of Holkham made a huge contribution to improvements in agriculture through his experiments with crops and stock breeding. The eighteenth century saw a huge interest in animal breeding to produce larger, healthier and meatier beasts. The pig in the picture is a saddleback. Pedigree stock bred for size, and the flavour of their meat, replaced the mongrel animals of an earlier age. What is the farm labourer wearing to protect his clothes?
