Agriculture

Interest in science during Stuart times was also applied to farming.

A man called Jethro Tull noticed that seed sown in the old, randomly scattered fashion often led to over-crowding of the plants' roots. He recommended 'drill' sowing in parallel, regular lines. To make life easier for his fellow farmers he invented a machine for the purpose - a seed drill as shown in the picture..

Jethro Tull's book, Horse-hoeing Husbandry, helped to revolutionise British agriculture.
