Victorian Agriculture Corn production expanded enormously through Victorian times. For much of the time it was reaped and the grain 'threshed' from the stalk by huge gangs of labourers. Technology, however, began to make itself felt. First of all in the application of steam power to the threshing process. A threshing machine was quicker, more effective and required less men. Those whose jobs were taken by the machines were not quite so delighted with them! Those working the machines found them dangerous, especially during the afternoon following a lunch washed down with their allowance of cider! Can you identify the threshing machine, the steam engine, the elevator and the sacks of grain? |
