The dodo, in the picture opposite, became extinct in the seventeenth century. Dodos were found by Portuguese sailors on an island in the Indian ocean called Mauritius.

The Portuguese destroyed their habitats (where they lived) to build settlements. The cats, rats and pigs they brought to the island, attacked or damaged their nests. Also, dodos were large, meaty birds and hunted for food. Unfortunately they were all eaten!

Dodos were birds. Why didn't they fly to freedom?

The last of the birds, called dodos, was killed in Stuart times. No one cared about saving them.
