Events

The 1950's saw the rock and roll revolution get underway. It had its roots in Rhythm and Blues and country music. But it was Bill Haley who got things going in 1955, and the teenage music revolution took off when the moody looking Elvis Presley flicked his hips on to the scene.

Fifties legends like Jerry Lee lewis and Buddy Holly paved the way for the self taught rock players of the 1960's. Led by the Beatles, a great wave of rock and blues bands took the world by storm. Youth culture led by these rock heroes was unknown in earlier centuries.

The Seventies were remembered for punk rock. Band Aid and Live Aid, at the end of the Eighties, used rock music to help global problems.

The 1990's saw some of the eager kids of earlier years, and now multi millionaires, trying to keep their name alive - Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Madonna ........

Rock concerts were the major events for the young of the late twentieth century.

Football developed from a late Victorian working man's pastime.

The oldest club still in existence is Sheffield United , whose history goes back to the 1850s. Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion date from the 1870s.

Football enjoyed a heyday between 1900 and 1939 as the game of the industrial working class.

By the second half of the twentieth century football games became major sporting events.

Support for different teams is almost tribal!

For a while matches were troubled with hooliganism and violence.

All seater stadiums and heavy police presence at major matches have reduced trouble.

Football heroes and pop stars have become amongst the richest people in the world.
