More peaceful times led to a huge demand for domestic building, particularly timber-framed houses. Not only did builders see a boost in trade, but so did those skilled in decorative techniques - wood and stone carvers, plasterers and so on.

There was a very strong work ethic associated with the Protestant religion And a willingness to try new things. (Henry VIII had changed the country's religion from Catholic to Protestant). This was particularly the case amongst break away groups such as the Puritans and the Quakers.

It is no coincidence that many go ahead people of late Stuart and Georgian times had Quaker backgrounds e.g.the Abraham Darbys of Coalbrookdale.
