Christopher Columbus discovered America in very early Tudor times.

One of the consequences of this discovery was to bring a great range of new plants to this country.

In the early days people were most interested in different foodstuffs, and of course tobacco. Tobacco was smoked in pipes, chewed or sniffed up the nose as snuff. Cigarettes did not arrive on the scene until late Victorian times.
