The Stuarts Transport This Stuart gentleman travels in one of the newly 'sprung' coaches making the journey along rough roads more comfortable. The problem of poor roads was dealt with in a new way by the forming of Turnpike Trusts from 1663 onwards. Those who used the roads were to pay for their upkeep. Tollhouses were built with a gate across the road. People had to pay a toll to pass through. There were so many turnpikes trusts, and some were not very efficient. Long distance travel could be irritating, slow and costly. What are the springs of the coach made from? Click the picture for an answer. |
