The use of cannon and shot fired by gunpowder transformed war.

Gunpowder - a mixture of sulphur, saltptere and crushed charcoal - was invented by the Chinese.

It was in effective use in England from 1450 onwards.

Archers and knights gradually disappeared.

The hand gun was developed too, alongside varied large pieces of field artillery (cannon).
