Horses played a role in battles from the great destriers who helped William the Conqueror win the Battle of Hastings to those used in North Africa during the Second World War.

But the famous 'Charge of the Light Brigade' during the Crimean War (1854 - 56) was in fact one of the last times the cavalry was to play a major part in European warfare.

This charge was the result of a miunderstood order - nearly the whole of the crack Light Brigade was mown down by Russian guns.

The performance of the army generally during the Crimean War highlighted poor leadership and management of ressources. It prompted major reforms.
