Twentieth Century Women The century opened with the Suffragette Movement - women demanding the right to vote. During the First World War they took on men's jobs as they were away fighting. They proved themselves! In 1918 all women over 30 were given the vote, and this was extended to all women over 21 in 1928. Women played a key role during the Second World War too. There was no going back. By the end of the century girls expect to train for a job or a career. Women no longer have to give up their jobs when they marry. They are paid for doing the same work as men. Women are found in top positions in every kind of workplace. In 1979 Margaret Thatcher became the first woman Prime Minister.
