Women

The enlightened way of thinking allowed rich girls to learn to read and write. They still had to practise the more womanly accomplishments - sewing, playing music and singing.

For ordinary women there were more jobs in grand households. Servants now expected wages rather than just working for food, clothes and somewhere to live. Women were paid less than men so more were employed in domestic jobs.

The new manufactories - spinning and weaving cotton - provided work for large numbers of women outside the home for the first time in history
