Portrait of Duchess Sforza Cea-Sarini

by Pompeo Batoni (1760-1770)

This oil painting depicts Teresa Carracola, the first wife of Gaetano II Sforza Cae-Sarini, the Duke of Segini.

The Duchess wears an elaborately embroidered corset featuring floral patterns. The corset is worn outside of the other garments. The painting shows that corsets were highly fashionable and desirable amongst women in high society during the 18th century.
