Teaching Sessions
T
here are opportunities to support Key Stage 2 History Studies by visiting Birmingham’s Museum and Art Gallery. There is a limited display of artefacts from Ancient Greece, mainly pottery, lamps and votive objects. Ancient Rome is represented by a selection of gravestones and several local finds.

Egypt
A permanent Egyptian display is the featured Archaeology Gallery. It is housed on a balcony and easily accessible glass cases demonstrate a flavour of everyday life in Ancient Egypt. Jewellery, occupations and pottery are represented, along with a variety of stelae and funerary objects.

Role Play Sessions
Birmingham schools may benefit from handling sessions, provided by a teacher in role, as a Greek athlete, or a Roman Centurion. Similarly, a visit to the Egyptian Gallery may be supported by a teacher in role as a papyrus paper-maker. These sessions provide an atmosphere for handling artefacts, all of which are linked directly to the character’s lifestyle. Non-Birmingham schools may visit the galleries, but without the teaching facilities. Support materials, such as teachers’ notes and worksheets for pupils are available for all schools which have booked visits.
