Who we are...

Birmingham Education Department has a unique resource in its day and residential centres, including museums, which provide learning opportunities for over 100,000 pupils from 3,500 school groups each year.

Opportunities for learning

The Service caters for the whole age range. Activities are designed to fulfil Programmes of Study in the National Curriculum and course work requirements for G.C.S.E., 'A' level and vocational qualifications. These experiences lead naturally to a wide range of opportunities for follow up work back in the classroom.

Making the most of the experience

Enhancement of personal, social and moral development along with cultural understanding underpins the work of the Service. In particular, residential centres provide extended stays in safe, secure and caring environments where pupils have the time to confront and resolve real issues. Outdoor education provides challenging situations which encourage both self-awareness and group development.

Settings and Situations

There are seven Day Centres in and around Birmingham, including one exclusively for children with special needs. They offer invaluable farm, environmental and outdoor experiences. In addition, the Museums Schools Liaison Department provides a service at five sites in suburban locations such as Blakesley Hall as well as the city centre museums. Residential experience is available at four centres in diverse settings such as Belbroughton and Bangor.
