The Building

The Corn Mill (1765)

The brick steps, the white door, the loading deck and the lucam (the white wooden projection that overhangs the yard) were for loading and unloading corn sacks from a horse and cart. The loading deck can be raised up like a drawbridge when it is not in use.

The Chimney

The chimney was built in 1855, when a steam engine was put in. As the pond was struggling to keep up with the needs of the two water wheels by the 1850s, the owner raised money to put in a steam engine to cope with the increased demand for power.

The Garner or loft

The garner was the best place to store corn because it was the driest part of the Mill. It was also more difficult for rats to get at the corn as the ladders would be pulled up at night and as many as three cats kept there to keep vermin at bay.

The Cottage

On the left of the building is the blade grinding shop and the old cottage that the miller lived in during the 19th century.

The Blade Grinding Workshop

Water power was used to grind sword blades and to bore gun barrels from 1800 - 1850. There is a model of a man at work at the grind stone putting the finishing touches to a file. This work often caused diseases affecting the lungs as these workers wore no masks to protect them.
