A reconstruction drawing of Weoley Castle

The picture below shows how Weoley Castle could have looked around 1424. It has been drawn by Brian Byron, an archaeological illustrator. He devised this picture using:-

  • photographs of the present ruins
  • ground plans
  • a description of the castle written in 1424
  • advice from David Symons, Curator with Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, and Mike Hodder the City Archaeologist
  • his own extensive knowledge and expertise in castle reconstruction drawings

There is a lot we don't know about Weoley Castle. This picture is a 'best guess' as to how it could have looked. Features like the well are easily identified. Ovens and hearths are evidence of bakehouse and kitchen. But it is not so easy to tell what some buildings were used for.There was certainly an outer bailey beyond the drawbridge. It is not clear how (or if) the walls joined the current castle ruins.
