Flood plain

The flood plain is the flat ground by the stream, at the bottom of the valley.

If there is heavy rain the stream will get higher and higher. It may then overflow its banks and cause flooding.

If the stream overflows its banks, it deposits (puts down) the material it is carrying (transporting).

Sand, mud and stones have been deposited on this stream bank during a flood.

Look on the left bank, can you see where there has been deposition?.

Flood water may be left behind on the stream bank after a flood.

Can you see a pool of flood water in this picture?
