WOODGATE VALLEY COUNTRY PARK

Woodgate Valley

Woodgate Valley is an area of meadows, hedgerows, woods and streams on the western edge of Birmingham. Most of the Country Park was originally farmland, although there were also brick works, clay pits and nailmaking sites. It is now a haven for wildlife and, therefore, a valuable educational resource for schools.

Facilities

The visitor centre has a room that is used as a classroom base/lunch area. There is also a small café and toilet facilities. Souvenirs can be bought from the information desk. Outside there is seating, a small playground and playing fields.

Educational visits

There is currently a Schools Liaison Teacher based at Woodgate Valley, who works with the Ranger Service to provide educational activities for schools. Half-day teaching sessions can be booked on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These sessions are for 2 hours, from 10-12am or 1-3pm (exact timings are negotiable). Sessions are based in the classroom and the Valley, and are linked to the National Curriculum.

Activities

Colours in nature, shapes, materials, life processes, plant classification, animal classification (invertebrates), habitats (woodland, hedgerow meadow, stream), adaptation, food chains and webs, stream study, maps, conservation/sustainable development........others can be designed to meet specific needs.
